Occupy Central

Occupy Central, also known as “Umbrella Movement ”, was a protest that saw thousands of people blocking major roads in Hong Kong to call for democratic elections. The protesters demanded that the Hong Kong and Beijing governments implement democratic elections for the 2017 chief executive election, and the 2020 Legislative Council election. Opposition members said that the political reform proposals at the time did not meet international standards of universal suffrage. Protests began by taking up roads outside the Central Government Offices in Tamar on September 28, 2014. After police responded with tear gas to disperse crowds, protests grew and more people began occupying other roads in Mong Kok and Causeway Bay as well. Occupy Central lasted 79 days and ended in December that year.
