Liu Xiaobo
Liu Xiaobo was a Chinese artist, poet, literary critic, activist. He was also the first Chinese citizen to win the Nobel Peace Prize “for his and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China.” Liu was arrested by the Chinese government in 2008 after co-authoring Charter 08, a document that calls for a gradual change of the Chinese political system towards democracy. He spent 11 years in prison. In June 2017, he was transferred to a hospital under medical parole after being diagnosed with late-stage liver cancer. Liu passed away from his illness on July 13.
