This month, homegrown artist Clementine Chan is sending her two beloved characters, Bluey and Pipi the Penguin, on a journey to France in her solo exhibition Très Très Bleu, an associated project with Le French May.
This is not Bluey’s first such voyage. Last year, making her debut as part of the 25th edition of Le French May, she took an initial “tour” of the baguette republic, immediately winning hearts with her wit and cherubic qualities, and Chan’s imaginative storytelling.
This time around, Bluey’s special assignment is to make the “Macaron” - and the world - great again. As leader of her one-girl Blue Party, she is running for president against Pipi La Pen. Along the way, she also takes a detour to the “Musée de Fous” to pay tribute to her all-time favourite artists.
Chan originally created the whimsical character and her chubby feathered friend back in 2011 from what started as a random doodle on an iPad.
Separately, Chan is also the designer of one of the meeting rooms at the brand-new Times Square headquarters of the South China Morning Post.
Her new illustrated book, Bon Voyage, Bluey, will be making its debut at the exhibition. Written in English and traditional Chinese characters, with a smattering of French, the colourful and engaging story makes fun of clichés of France, but also highlights key aspects of its culture and why it matters.
