Inner Mongolia turns 70
On May 1, 1947, Inner Mongolia became China’s first province-level autonomous region. During the past 70 years, the region has seen enormous development.
Its economy has expanded from 537 million yuan (HK$606 million) to 1.86 trillion yuan. It now ranks first among the country’s five autonomous regions. Its foreign trade volume increased from US$11 million to US$11.7 billion in the same period.
While the current capital is the city of Hohhot, from 1947 to 1949 that honour was held by Ulanhot, the city we see in these photos today.
