Science students

We were not literature students,
we were science students experimenting with
graphs, chemicals and beakers filled with secrets
breathed into the phone at dawn

the effects of no sleep
the effects of loneliness,
these were factors for which we had no control

there were papers
never to be written,
pushed off the bed onto the floor

heart rates increase
pupils dilate
pulsing  sensations
that can be transcribed,
into chemical reactions
but cannot be understood until they are truly
felt

we were not literature students,
we knew the heart was a muscle
the size of our fists
but it seemed so much more
