You might think that I would go with the grain and say that my favourite sports star is basketball player Michael Jordan, or tennis-queen Serena Williams, however my favourite sports are someone lesser-known. Her name is Sarah Attar.

To me, her most outstanding sporting moment was In the 2012 London Olympics. Sarah had received a standing ovation from the 80,000 spectators, however it was not due to her sporting abilities, but rather owing to her making history. She was the first female athlete to represent Saudi Arabia in the Olympics.

As we all know, women in Saudi Arabia, one of the most conservative countries in the world, are quite heavily oppressed. Women there cannot do a multitude of things without permission from a male figure; from travelling to seeking medical treatment. In contrast, as a girl in Hong Kong, this all sounds extremely obscure; I can do as I please, I am seen as equal to my male counterparts.

Since then, she has participated in more competitions, however that moment in the 2012 Olympic really stood out to me. Sarah made history that day. Recently, women in Saudi Arabia have been allowed to drive, personally I think that this event paved the way for that, she opened a door to the women in Saudi Arabia, and the women all over the world, giving them hope and courage to fight for more and not solely settle for what they’re given. She showed them that it was possible, she showed them that they did not have to constantly live how they are told to, and have a say for themselves. She made more than just history, but an echo for years to come.
