Quaresma's (left) love for his national team is obviously.

My favourite sports star is Ricardo Quaresma, a Portuguese national football player. I am Portuguese, so watching our team play always makes me proud of my country. Every summer that there is a Euro or World Cup for football, I spend the summer nights cheering for Portugal. There was nothing more heartwarming than hearing the cars toot their horns in victory and the yells of happiness the night that Portugal won the Euro 2016.

Quaresma pulls off incredible moves on the field, and I notice people often judge him for the tattoos and his unconventional look. However, I think that despite the fact that people judge him about his appearance and are prejudiced about his Gypsy roots (many call him “o cigano”, which means The Gypsy in Portuguese), he’s fought his way up to become one of the best. I love seeing him play not only because of his skill but because you can see his focus on field and the love for his team.

I’m extremely proud that for the first time in such a long time Portugal has made it into the Sevens World Series Pools, and really hope to be able to be there to cheer for them, no matter the outcome. That is one of my favourite things about Quaresma: his spirit for his team and determination to not be the best, just his best. I think that applies to both players and watchers, as one needs the other to play successfully. I would be incredibly thrilled to be able to be one of the Portuguese voices in the crowd, waving one of the many patriotic flags I have in my room.
