We asked our readers to write a short piece of creative writing related to dragons. Here is one of the entries. It has not been edited.

There was nothing but darkness. I heard a sound behind me and turned, and came face to face with a horned gigantic creature I thought only existed in books – a dragon. I rubbed my eyes to wake myself up from the ‘dream’. No, it was not a nightmare, it was reality. I was trembling with adrenaline and fear, my mouth was left opened. The dragon had broad wings that created a chilly breeze every time it flapped.  Its body was covered with spiky scales. I could see its desire to kill beneath its eyes.

My body tensed, I had nothing but only a short knife. Who would have thought an explorer would encounter a dragon while investigating a cave? I raised the knife firmly in the air and staggered backwards in a slow motion. Each step I took, my legs were quivering. The dragon was not startled, it became more ambitious and stumbled towards me. To distract the dragon, I picked rocks and threw them towards the tail of the dragon. It turned his head to check on its tail. I quickly covered myself with an egg shell I found on the ground. Fortunately, it covered my curled-up body well.

I thought the dragon must have lost sight of me, as I heard no sign of movement underneath the egg shell. I let out a sigh of relief and relaxed. For instance, an escape plan flashed in my head. I didn’t plan to escape that moment. I planned to pretend a newborn dragon hatching from the egg, and I would growl softly. I guessed the dragon would not treat me as a foreign-being this way, it probably forgot my existence after a sleep.

Sun rays shone through the cave, it was time to start my mission. I knocked on the egg shell to get its attention. Next, I punched the wall of the shell, it cracked. I mimicked the dragon’s language, and roared. The dragon responded with a gentle growl. I then ‘flew’ out from the egg shell and towards the dragon. My hands were flapping as I walked. My plan seemed to be working smoothly. The dragon bowed down so I climbed on its back. It swooshed to the exit of the cave as I patted his neck for directions.

The ‘fire breather’ dropped me down, I roared ‘thanks’ to it and ‘flew’ away. Lucky me!
