Star Wars has taken over Hong Kong Disneyland!

The main attraction of the new Star Wars-themed area is Hyperspace Mountain, a rocketing roller-coaster simulating the fast turns and sudden drops of an epic hyperspace dogfight. The ride doesn’t have any extreme drops or loops, but has lots of sudden fast-paced turns, rises and falls – in almost complete darkness.

After zooming through hyperspace, riders encounter a surprise attack from a squadron of Imperial Tie fighters. Deafended by blasters and blinded by flashing lights, you exchange rapid fire with Imperial fighters in an intense shoot-out in space.

Verdict: Most visitors to Disney will recognise that the ride is Space Mountain given a Star Wars facelift. The roller coaster is still very popular, with long lines throughout the day. Disney's free Fastpass lets you skip the queues and head straight to the ride.

The ride itself isn’t extremely thrilling, and avid thrill-seekers might find it pretty tame. The disorienting darkness and the fast-paced visual effects mean the ride is only a bit more exciting that it was before. That said, if you’re visiting Disneyland, Hyperspace Mountain is still one of the park’s must-see attractions.

Everyone has seen the viral clip of “Texas mom” laughing while wearing a Chewbacca mask, and we finally understand what made her so excited when we met Chewbacca inside a hidden Rebel base.

Chewie may be a 200-year-old Wookiee, but he is as lively as he is hairy. He doesn’t speak human languages so he expresses himself through hugs, high fives or a fist bump.

Verdict: From the comfort of his base, you can take your own selfie with the galaxy’s greatest co-pilot, or pay to have a professional one taken and printed.

Unfortunately, Chewbacca has battles to fight and a starship to co-pilot, so he is only available at certain times of the day. Make sure you check the timetable before popping by the legendary warrior’s hide out.

Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple is a live performance where aspiring young warriors learn the ways of the force and meet characters from The Force Awakens. Young Jedis confront Kylo Ren in a spectacular fight and use their new skills to stop him from destroying the New Republic.

Verdict: The show is multilingual, with most of the dialogue in Cantonese. It’s aimed at younger children, but this doesn’t mean that audiences of any age won’t find it entertaining.

Tummy growling like a wookiee? Disneyland went to town designing a range of meals and treats that tie in with the franchise: BB-8-shaped slushie cups, Lightsaber churros (our favourite), and even a Star Wars sundae cone.

Verdict: Although the snacks look great, they taste the same as they would everywhere else, and they are quite expensive for just a small bite.

We had a really fun day at the park, but Hong Kong Disneyland could gave gone further in its reimagining of Tomorrowland. At first glance, it looks the same as it has for the last 10 years.

You have to look carefully for the new attractions, and they feel slightly underwhelming when you eventually find them. Nevertheless, the new attractions are still high quality, as you would expect from Disney.

If you’re not a diehard fan, it’s probably not worth planning a visit for the new attractions alone.

But for anyone already going to Disneyland this summer, the Star Wars additions make for an especially fun day out.
