ROYP: Words from Kendrick Lamar, Florence and the Machine and others that inspire and drive our readers

Each week, we’ll be asking some Young Post readers to share a little bit about themselves and a quote that gets them through life

I looked it up online and apparently the best way to introduce yourself is with a joke (Lifehack, 2018), so here goes.

When I was in primary school, I was a big fan of tractors, but then one day I stopped liking them for some reason. A few months later, my class went on a field trip to the History Museum when a fire started in the reception area. No one knew what to do, except me. I closed my eyes and inhaled the fumes.

When I opened my eyes, the room was clear and the fire was gone.“How the heck did you do that?” asked one of the students. I replied: “I’m an extractor fan.” And then everyone clapped.

I’m Hemant, a 15-year-old student from Renaissance College, and I like lame jokes. That ispretty much everything you need to know about me.

Most inspiring quote

“If I told you that a flower bloomed in a dark room, would you trust it?”

– American rapper / songwriter Kendrick Lamar

I really love this quote. Not only is it beautifully constructed, it can also be interpreted in so many different ways depending on the context. For me, it serves as a reminder that people should not be judged by the circumstances in which they were born (“dark room”), but rather who they are now, and the inner beauty they have cultivated (“flower”).

The past does not matter any more. It’s what you do with the present that counts. A simple message of infinite impact.

ROYP: The inspiring words that motivate our readers to achieve great things

Hello! I’m a 17-year-old who loves travelling to exotic places, even though they appear only in books or films. You will probably find me in a corner gorging on delicious food or devouring a good book, or both. I love listening to indie music and enjoying life in general.

Most inspiring quote

“I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.”

– Harry Potter (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)

You only have one life, so why not live it to the fullest? Break off your shackles, throw the rule book out of the window and just go on an adventure. Also, Harry Potter is the best book series hands down, case closed.

ROYP: From books to beats – inspiring words our readers take comfort in

Hi! I’m Man-ching. I’m a 17-year-old student at South Island School. In my final year of secondary school, I hope to make the most of every opportunity I get, and step out of my comfort zone and accept challenges. Other than that, I enjoy film, culture, history and most definitely sleep!

Most inspiring quote:

“Little by little, one travels far.”

– Fantasy novelist J.R.R. Tolkien

Patience and effort on a daily basis can help me achieve my goals. Despite the hardship, the end is always satisfactory!

ROYP: Wise words that uplift our readers in times of despair

I am currently taking a gap year and will be going to a university abroad in 2019. I am passionate about pets (because I own a long-haired Chihuahua), dancing, especially ballet, and jazz. I cannot stand the heat; I love chilly weather. My idea of a great day is to stay indoors, get cosy on the couch, and read an inspirational self-help book.

Most inspiring quote

“It’s hard to dance with a devil on your back, so shake him off.”

– British indie rock band, Florence and the Machine

This has been taken from the song Shake it out. The song was sent to me by a close friend when I was struggling to prepare for my A-levels. It encouraged me to stop being anxious because it is hard to be successful when you are worried or nervous. You can achieve great things if you can “shake off” the negative emotions.
