ROYP: The inspiring words that motivate our readers to achieve great things
Each week, we’ll be asking some Young Post readers to share a little bit about themselves and a quote that gets them through life
My name is Hana van de Wiel, and I am a self-proclaimed foodie, K-pop enthusiast and avid reader. I might leave my phone at home, but I never leave home without a book. When I’m not fan-girling about K-pop groups or eating, I love walking around the city and discovering new eats.
Most inspiring quote:
“Today is the oldest you’ve ever been, and the youngest you’ll ever be again.” Eleanor Roosevelt.
Whenever I find myself hesitating or doing something I don’t enjoy, I think back to this quote. Eleanor Roosevelt’s words remind me to live in the present as time slips by quickly. Don’t waste precious hours on something you don’t feel passionate about. You only live life once, you’d better make it count.
ROYP: inspiring words that give our readers that little extra push they need
Hi! I’m Armaan. In Hong Kong, I’m from India, and in India I’m from Hong Kong. So, yeah, I’m sort of having an identity crisis right now.
I turn 16 in February and start Year 11 soon but I still have no idea where I’m headed. Soon I’ll have to choose my subjects for IB, and not long after that I’ll be applying to university. But I won’t let that worry drag me down - I enjoy Design, Film, and the Sciences, and wherever those talents take me I’m happy to go!
Most inspiring quote:
“A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others." Ayn Rand
It isn’t all about scores from standardised testing, or being able to memorise information blindly without understanding it. It’s about doing the best you can and constantly improving yourself. It’s about always learning and never giving up. There’s always going to be someone better than you, faster than you, smarter than you - but as a wise somebody once said, hard work beats talent 100 per cent of the time. And I agree.
ROYP: From Brave New World to the Bible - inspiring words our readers take comfort in
Most inspiring quote:
“Let and let live” Proverb
This is the quote that has affected me the most. To me, it had the most impact because I always used to care about how other people lived their lives and what they thought of me. It’s not like I don’t care anymore, it’s more, I am happy being who I am and vice-versa. I am content with the fact that everyone is different and everyone’s opinions and feelings should be respected.
ROYP: From Camus to Three Idiots, our readers tell us what keeps them going
An extroverted introvert would best describe who I am. I enjoy travelling to different places and meeting new people. On other days, I like to indulge myself with a good cup of coffee and a nice book. I love taking photos, trying new desserts and watching movies. I got interested in journalism after serving at my school’s Campus TV for three years. My aspiration is to become a travel reporter.
Most inspiring quote:
“This too shall pass.”Anonymous
This quote has motivated me in my toughest moments, especially during my HKDSE examinations earlier this year. We face challenges every now and then. While it may seem impossible to get over them at the very beginning, this quote reminded me that everything is going to pass eventually. All I need is to have faith in myself to make it through.
