The contestants

Contestant 1

“I wanted to talk to you about how you’ve managed to come up with such cool phones compared to the one I created 46 years ago. Although … you seem to be running into a lot of trouble these days, so maybe I want to hear about that instead … yeah, I want to know more about your relationship with the Chinese and US governments.

“You say that you do not share sensitive information with Beijing so is there another reason for why you do not release any evidence that you don’t spy on people? If you have proof of your innocence, then US might allow your products back into their country.

“The mainland and you both say you’re been wronged but without proof it’s hard to believe you. You also say the US is trying to prevent your tech from becoming the world’s most popular, but there’s no proof of that, either!”

Contestant 2

Imagination. Physics. Technology. In 1973, Martin Cooper invented the mobile phone with all three of these things. At the time, he said: “I want everyone to enjoy freedom and feel safe every day.” Today, lots of companies are making smartphones, and Huawei is considered one of the leaders.

Cooper would probably say to Huawei: “You are a leader in this industry! I never thought that 5G technology could exist!”

Cooper would be very impressed by the technology and want there to be more advanced smartphones in the future. Cooper would also share his ideas about the 5G technology. If he did, then maybe there would be 6G technology!

Cooper is 90 years old this year, and he has experienced a lot in his life. Although the US and the mainland are not really “friends” now, it wouldn’t stop Cooper from sharing his ideas with Huawei, as they would benefit the whole world.

Contestant 3

Martin Cooper would praise Huawei for what it has done. It is very popular and comes second to only Samsung in terms of sales.

As the inventor of the mobile phone, Cooper would be amazed at how far the technology has progressed in less than 50 years. I believe that he would talk to Huawei about matters concerning US President Donald Trump.

As you all know, Trump signed an executive order banning Huawei from doing business in the US. This means the Chinese technology giant will be unable to access much-needed parts from American companies any more. But Cooper could show Huawei how to continue to operate until Trump lifts the ban on the company.

Contestant 4

“Wait a second, do we even need all of this?” This would probably be his first reaction to the latest Huawei model. Back then, people used mobile phones to talk to others from far away. Now, we’ve got all sorts of apps, such as Snapchat and Instagram, on our phones. It’s almost like we are using them for everything but calling!

Martin Cooper would be astonished to see us glued to our phone screens and not paying any attention to the outside world. I reckon Cooper would get straight to work and, within no time, he would build another amazing phone equipped with technology that no one has ever imagined.

Maybe he would even decide to relaunch the original handheld phone he invented in 1973, and honestly, it would probably become a big hit again!

Contestant 5

“Finally done!” Martin Cooper has just finished making the first mobile phone in history. Then, he hears a sound.

“Hello, who are you?” he asks. It’s the founder and CEO of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei. “I’m Martin … nice to meet you. Wait, how come you own a phone? I am the only one in this world who owns a phone.”

“What are you talking about? Almost everyone owns a phone,” replies Ren. Martin realises he has been connected to the future and asks: “How are the phones today? Any new functions?” “They are amazing – especially the Huawei phones,” Ren says. “You can take pictures, too. The Huawei P30 Pro is truly wonderful.”

Photos! Cooper can’t believe it. Not only are phones will be used to call people, they will be used to take photos, too.

Contestant 6

Martin Cooper, the father of the mobile phone, would tell Huawei: “Well done, you’ve redefined mobile phones to a point that I would never have predicted. But there is something I need tell you.

“I had hoped, at first, that mobile phones would set people free. I wanted to make people feel comfortable, so the concept of stealing personal information angers me. Please do give your users some privacy so that smartphones can be truly personal, private, and protected.

“I also think that you should start making different devices with different functions instead of putting all the functions into one phone. Distribute the functions among many products, and maybe your products will take us one step closer to a better future. Good luck, Huawei!”

This is what I think would happen.
