Development squad member Giacomo Lamplough will join Hong Kong’s ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2015 touring squad, replacing Waqas Barkat who was unable to travel due to visa complications.

Hong Kong’s Director of Cricket Charlie Burke said, “I really feel for Waqas. As a former Vice-Captain he is a key member of the squad I know how disappointed he is, however he understands the situation. This is an exciting moment for Giacomo, who was known as a prodigious junior talent over his formative years and received the HKCA’s “Junior Player of the Year” this season while also performing at the highest level in senior cricket. He is one of the best fielders I have ever seen and … I know the boys cannot wait to welcome him officially into the group.”

“He has already packed in more international cricket experience than most players do in a lifetime through his membership of two clubs who tour frequently. With Hong Kong Cricket Club, Giacomo has played in New Zealand, Singapore, England and Australia in the last 18 months.”

Giacomo, 17, was born in Hong Kong and his parents and siblings play cricket too; his younger sister Marina is a member of the Hong Kong ladies’ development squad, having also played for the national team. “I could not be happier and this experience is going to provide me with a lot in terms of developing my cricket skills,” Giacomo told Young Post.

“I am looking forward to training and playing with my teammates at a high level, and going against some of the best players from other countries and learning from them,” he added.

Hong Kong land in Scotland on July 3 for their official practice matches against the Netherlands and Afghanistan. They then travel south and face Jersey in their first group match in Bready, Northern Ireland on July 11 in their bid to qualify for successive ICC World Twenty20 Tournaments. The 2016 event will be hosted by India next March.
