Leung Kai-fung won two gold medals at his school's Sports Day.Top athlete Leung Kai-fung was the star of the show at Sing Yin Secondary School’s Sports Day. Kai-fung broke a school record and won two gold medals at the annual event held at Kowloon Bay Sports Ground.
The final day of the sports competition took place on November 28. Due to strong winds and heavy rain, some events had to be cancelled. But Kai-fung, 17, was determined to do well at his final Sports Day before next year’s graduation.
Kai-fung began the day on an encouraging note, winning the 400m race in a record-breaking time of 54 seconds. But what challenged him most was the 1,500m race, which required good tactics and endurance. “Tactics are key to the long-distance race, because you can’t run at an explosive pace right through to the end. You have to conserve your energy. For the first 1,200 metres, I maintained a rhythm. Then I ran much faster over the final stretch,” said Kai-fung.
The race saw a thrilling battle between Kai-fung and his fierce rival Wong Ka-yum. Kai-fung edged ahead of Ka-yum in the last 100m and went on to win gold in 4 minutes, 59.10 seconds. He was closely followed by Ka-yum, 19, who came second in a time of 5:10.62.
Kai-fung said he tried different tactics during practice and found a way to win the race. “The training also helped boost my leg muscles, agility and breathing. It was also a good way to escape from my tight study schedule,” he said.
In the 100m race, 15-year-old runner Leung Chin-hin showcased his explosive power, clocking 12.45 seconds to win the gold medal.
Students from Blue House were crowned overall champions with a total of 650 points.
Physical education teacher Lee See-fuk was forced to cancel some events because of the bad weather to ensure students’ safety. But he was impressed with the students’ performances, especially Kai-fung and Chin-hin. “It was not easy to perform well because of the wind and rain and the track was slippery. However, their brilliant performances gave us some good memories on the final day,” Lee said.
