Karl Lagerfeld: Iconic designer of handbags and high fashion made his own rules

Lagerfeld was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1933. He first rose to fame in the fashion world in 1954, with the design of a yellow wool coat with a buckled collar, according to wallpaper.com. His design was picked up by Pierre Balmain, and a year later he was offered a position at maison Balmain.

In 1984, Lagerfeld launched his own line of fashion, collaborating with brands like Hogan, Louis Vuitton, H&M and Vans.

Fashion was not his only passion, however. He also enjoyed photography and collected art and furniture.
