Ever wished you could write a story using only emojis? Well, you’re one step closer to that being a possibility.
With 1,601 emojis already in existence, there are dozens of new ones on their way to your phone. The Unicode Consortium, the body that coordinates universal software standards for letters and other characters, has approved 72 new emojis.
From facial expressions and hand gestures, to animals, food and drink, the new images are set to be released on June 21; but smartphone users will have to wait for an update from their manufacturers.
Some long-requested symbols have joined the new roster, including rolling on the floor laughing, crossed fingers, selfie and facepalm. Some beloved animals like a gorilla and an owl will also be introduced.
You can now make an emoji breakfast, with avocado (hello avo toast!), kiwi fruit, cucumber, croissant, bacon and pancake joining the picture.
A dozen sports and medal emojis are also being added in time for the Rio Olympics. Gender equality has also been met, with opposite-sex counterparts introduced to previously existing "characters" such as the princess and Father Christmas: yes, there is now a prince and Mrs Claus.
