HK weather heats up on Tuen Ng Festival with temperatures of up to 34 degrees, HKO issues Very Hot Weather Warning
The Centre for Health Protection has reminded the public to carry and drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration while engaging in outdoor activities
The Very Hot Weather Warning is now in force, with the city’s temperature rising to about 33 degrees around noon today, according to the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) website.
The weather forecast for this afternoon shows the city will be “very hot apart from isolated showers in the afternoon.'' The temperature of Sai Kung, Sheung Shui, Shek Kong, and Peng Chau in the New Territories is forecast to hit 34 degrees.
Government press releases have been issued to warn the public about how to prevent heat stroke and sunburns, as well as to avoid prolonged outdoor activities.
In one of the press releases from The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH), CHP’s spokesman reminded the public to “carry and drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration while engaging in outdoor activities."
Beverages containing caffeine, such as coffee and tea, and alcohol should also be avoided by those engaging in vigorous outdoor activities, he added, as they speed up water loss through the urinary system.
Citizens are advised to wear loose and light-coloured clothing to reduce heat absorption and facilitate heat dissipation, as well as avoid strenuous exercise and outdoor activities for long periods of time.
It is also recommended that outdoor activities in the morning or late afternoon be performed in the morning or late afternoon.
If staying in a hot environment is unavoidable, regular rest under a cool and shaded area should be taken “to allow the body to recuperate.”
"The obese, the sick, including those with heart disease or high blood pressure, the old and the young are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. They should pay special attention," the spokesman added.
HKO forecasts sunny periods with a few showers over the weekend, while the weather next week will turn worse, with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms.
