Hongkongers will have to prepare for plenty more rain later this week as the Hong Kong Observatory expects the city to be hit by showers for eight of the next nine days.

The weather office issued a Thunderstorm Warning at 10am today and extended it to at least 2pm, saying squally thunderstorms are occasionally expected to occur over Hong Kong. The Observatory recorded 152 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes starting from 10am up till 12 noon, and more than 10 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over Kwai Tsing, Tsuen Wan, Sha Tin and Tai Po this morning.

They also warned of gusts reaching 90 kilometres per hour or above affecting the city.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department also announced the red flag has been hoisted at Shek O Beach and Clear Water Bay Second Beach because of big waves and poor weather.

“A trough of low pressure affecting southern China will move to the northern part of the South China Sea and weaken tomorrow. The easterly airstream over the coast of Guangdong will strengthen and showers will ease off in the latter part of this week” said the Observatory, predicting Friday would have sunny intervals but rest of the week would be cloudy and rainy. It also added “Another trough of low pressure is expected to develop over southern China early next week. The weather will become unsettled with thundery showers over the region.”

Temperatures and humidity are forecast to be fairly stable, with the maximum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius and minimum of 23 only fluctuating by two degrees. Humidity will remain high, holding between 95 per cent and 70 per cent with a dip on Friday.
