A free yoga and mindfulness programme is now calling for students to learn about tools for improving physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Here to Be is a weekly bilingual physical and mental health programme running from February 16 to April 6. It is to support teens aged 15 to 19 who are suffering from anxiety, depression, and maybe even suicidal thoughts.
There will be a total of eight classes, featuring a guided yoga and meditation practice and a group counselling session, all led by professionals including celebrity yoga teacher Margaret Chung, cognitive behavioural therapist Minal Mahtani, and clinical psychologist Edwin Yau.
“Yoga, meditation, and mindfulness practices, when combined with counselling, are actually very effective in coping with mental health challenges,” said Hersha Chellaram, the founder of non-profit organisation Yama Foundation.
Participants get to be involved in community service projects, added Chellaram. “We believe helping others and giving back to the community are very important in assisting the development of good mental health.”
The programme will run on Saturdays from 10am to noon at the fitness centre LRCF Fitness Hong Kong in Prince Edward.
Chellaram said she hopes the programme will help young people find the right tools to process negative emotions, confront life challenges, and develop emotional resilience. “We don’t want any young people to feel alone or isolated when they’re feeling academic or social pressure.”
Local and international student participants will get Creativity, activity, service (CAS) or Other Learning Experiences (OLE) credits upon completion of the programme.
Here to Be is co-organised by Yama Foundation and athletic apparel company Lululemon Athletica. The deadline for registration is February 8. Students who are interested can find more information and sign up on their website.
