Chief Secretary Carrie Lam, has submitted her resignation, local broadcaster Cable TV reported, citing people it didn’t identify.

Lam, 59, will step down from her position as Chief Secretary, Cable TV said today, setting up a possible run for the chief executive role. Neither her office or that of Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying immediately responded to e-mails seeking comment.

Last month, lawmaker Regina Ip became the first Beijing loyalist to formally launch a bid to succeed Leung, days after Financial Secretary John Tsang resigned from his post. The central government hasn’t yet accepted, delaying any formal campaign bid.
