Almost 80 per cent of the 22,164 DSE candidates, or 17,519 students, who have been offered places at local universities have been offered one of their top three choices, the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (Jupas) Office announced this morning.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has admitted three top DSE scorers. Tammy Yiu Tsz-ching, a top scorer from Diocesan Girls’ School (DGS), will study dentistry. St Paul’s Co-educational College’s top performer Se Wing-tung will study the university’s BBA (Law) & LLB integrated double-degree programme. Wong Ho-sum from Queen’s College will study medicine.

The Chinese University (CUHK) admitted Bernice Cheung Cheuk-sin, a DGS student with a perfect score, who will study medicine (Global Physician-Leadership Stream).

Moses Lam Ka-nam, who scored 5** in six DSE subjects, will study medicine at HKU. The Christian and Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School student was raised in a single-parent family and his inspirational story has been widely reported.

DGS’s Elaine Wong, who was named South China Morning Post’s 2014 Student of the Year (Cantonese) Linguist winner and scored 5** in six DSE subjects this year, will join Moses to study medicine.

About 82 per cent of those given offers, or 18,234 students, will study bachelor’s degree programmes, while more than 17 per cent, or 3,930 students, have been offered places on associate degrees or higher diploma programmes.

Approximately 42.2 per cent of the candidates who sat the Diploma of Secondary Education this year obtained at least the minimum score required by the eight government-funded universities – scoring at least 3 in Chinese language and English language, and at least 2 in maths and liberal studies – which is 1.9 per cent higher than last year.

The Jupas office “strongly” advised applicants who received an offer they wish to accept to do so immediately, pending rechecking and remarking of the DSE papers on August 10. All successful applications should have paid the acceptance fee for the Main Round offer by 5pm on August 9.
