Those odd things you love

Those odd things you love

Geek Pride Day was May 25. To celebrate, we asked our readers to tell us the geekiest thing about them. Here are the top 10 answer …

1. Parlez-vous Geek?

I speak a few distinct languages on a daily basis. There's Animese (Oh my god, guys. Durarara!! Season two is coming out! Imagine the Shizaya!), Leagueuage (GG guys, I failed that so hard. GG life. I'm going to Yolo Q now.), and I aspire to learn Elvish, Dothraki, the Ancient Language and Japanese, among other things. I hope they have SATs for those.

2. Everyday I'm tumblring!

I'm an intense tumblr blogger and I drip with liquid geek pride every time someone reblogs, likes or follows me. It's overwhelming to see how many people have the same feelings and obsessions as you. Plus, the sense of humour that people have on tumblr is unbelievably entertaining. Fandoms are one of the biggest parts of tumblr, and if you belong to one, you'll feel at home every time you log in. And trust me, if you're a fan of any band, celebrity, TV show or movie, finding your own fandom on tumblr is inevitable.

3. Fantasy with a side of song & dance

I'm part of six fandoms: Sherlock, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Big Bang Theory, Supernatural and … The Phantom of the Opera. I know, I know, but other than brilliant shows and film series I have a thing for awesome musicals. Did you know there's a sequel, Love Never Dies?

4. Too nerdy for Qwerty

I type in Dvorak. It's a system where you swap all the letters on your keyboard around so the most-used ones are close together. It's supposed to help you type faster. If nothing else, it's fun watching people do a double-take when they try to type on your machine!

5. Geeking out (loud)

My friends and I once created our own language that uses normal words but with some random sounds in between. For instance, "Let's go swimming" will be "Li-net's g-no swi-nimming". It's pretty fun and we still use it when we don't want others to know what we're talking about.

6. Geekiness is in the eye of the beholder

I have a super geeky eyewear collection, which includes fluorescent yellow framed glasses and steampunk goggles. Hopefully I will be able to rock the Google Glass look within five years' time as well.

7. Letter perfect geekiness

My friends and teachers always tell me that neat handwriting isn't important if you're going to type your reports, but I insist that every word I write has to be in perfect "shape", no matter how much time and effort it takes. Otherwise, I'm left unsatisfied.

8. The bride of steel

I secretly wish that I were Lois Lane. She's a career minded journalist ... and she's married to Superman! That's not geeky at all, is it?

Jennifer Tang, 17, Carmel Secondary School

9. geeky: gi'ki, adj: Mizuki's hobby

I used to copy out the entire dictionary, literally transferring the text on to multiple notebooks by hand, just for fun ... That's geeky, right?

Mizuki Nishiyama, 15, Canadian International School

10. The geek queen of Transylvania

I am a fiction-crazed bookworm. Confession: it took me less than a day to finish Twilight's final novel Breaking Dawn, and I have been addicted to vampire fiction ever since.
