An ode to mums

An ode to mums

Last Sunday was Mother's Day. We asked our readers what they love most about their mothers. Here are their answers …

1. Live life to the fullest

What I love most about my mum is her youthful enthusiasm. She believes that it is never too late to learn new skills, and that mistakes are invaluable learning opportunities. I love that she decided to learn to play the guitar in her 40s - despite being tone-deaf. Most of all I love her open-minded mentality to support and accept my unconventional choices.

2. So fresh, so clean

My mum has great taste in washing powders, so all my clothes, blankets and pillows smell balmy and cosy.

Ruby Leung, 17, Maryknoll Convent School

3. Tough love

I love how patient and gentle my mum is with me, especially when I'm ill or depressed. But what I love most about her is her nagging reminders: telling me to wear warmer clothes or not spend too much time on the phone. I know it's all because she really cares about me.

4. Not a helicopter

I love how my mum lets me try new things. After my public exams ended, she let me go on a ski and dive trip with my friends. Other mums probably wouldn't allow that. I am very grateful to have an open-minded mum, not a "helicopter mum" who hovers around!

Wendy Ki, 17, Heep Yunn School

5. She always puts me first

Some mums are too busy with their work and don't have time for their children, but that's definitely not the case with mine. She's always there for me, during both sunny and rainy days!

Rai Arlin, 16, St Margaret's Girls College

6. Lending an ear

I am quite stubborn and a bit of a perfectionist, so it's rare for me to find someone who can tolerate my personality. But my mum is the exception. No matter how annoying it may be to hear me complain a million times, she always listens patiently. Her tolerance gives me strength to move forward.

7. Daily check-ups

Even when my mum is busy at work, she'll make time to call and ask if I've had my lunch yet. These calls makes me feel warm and loved. I can feel her devotion, even when we're apart.

Man Yching, 16, Fung Kai Liu Man Shek Tong Secondary School

8. She lets me be me

What I love most about my mum is that she tolerates me and gives me many chances to do what I want to do. Even when she's angry with me, I know it's out of love.

9. Good cook, and good looks

I love my mum not only for her mastery of cooking and the pretty genes I've inherited from her, but also for the effort she has invested in our family. Every Christmas, she writes cards for the whole family!

Winnie Lee Wing-yee, 18, Community College of City University

10. My personal alarm clock

Not only is my mum a great mother, she's also a great human clock! She always wakes me up at the time I need to, and without her, I would be late so often.

Thank you, Mum!

Li Ka-ki, 16, Fung Kai Liu Man Shek Tong Secondary School
