Happy Meal toys

When I was younger, I liked to play with the toys from McDonald’s Happy Meals. I have happy memories of playing with them while I was eating my meal. I would try to collect all the toys from each series.

Yo-yo

My favourite toy was definitely my yo-yo. It was a birthday gift from my classmates when I was in Primary Three. They knew I really wanted a yo-yo but couldn’t afford one, so they decided to get me one. I can still remember having exciting duels with my friends. We would see who could get their yo-yo to “fly” the furthest. Even though I don’t play with my yo-yo any more, I keep it because it reminds me of those good times playing with my friends, and makes me smile.

Lego

My favourite childhood toy, without a doubt, has to be Lego. I really enjoyed the satisfaction of building my own creations. When I was little, I received Lego sets at Christmas, on birthdays … basically on every special occasion. That meant I could keep building new things without having to destroy the old ones first – which I never liked having to do.

Definitely Lego! I could let my imagination and creativity run away with me by building whatever I wanted. It made me forget about all my worries. I also liked to think that the mini Lego figures came to life at night (like those in Toy Story) and enjoy the beach or castle I had built for them!

Which shop would you shop for free at?

Fluffy teddy

When I was young, I loved my teddy more than any other toy. Whenever I felt sad, I would just talk to it. It may seem silly, but my teddy felt like a friend. It would always listen to me, day or night, even when no one else did. If I needed comfort, I would hug it and cry, and I would feel better afterwards. My teddy was like a true friend to me.

Spinning top

When I was young, my favourite toy was a spinning top. I absolutely loved it. I would spin it, then watch the colourful patterns on top of it all blur into  one. I especially loved playing with my younger brother. Looking back, those were some of the happiest times of my life. My brother and I don’t play any more because we are teenagers, but I still keep the spinning top under my bed. Every time I see, I’m reminded of those happy times.

Which two animals would you combine?

Toy cars

It has to be toy cars. I liked them for two reasons; firstly, there are so many different types you can play with, from motorbikes to trucks. Secondly, I really liked the Disney-Pixar film, Cars. The characters were so cool. The advancement of technology means that nowadays, many young people prefer to play with things like iPads. But I have such happy memories of playing with my little toy cars.

Toy piano

My favourite toy was a small toy piano that my dad’s friend was throwing away, so decided to give to me. Every day after I’d finished my homework, I would play songs on the toy piano – even though I had a white grand piano in my living room. The toy piano felt like my best friend. Unfortunately, one day my cousins came over and threw it on the floor, breaking the keys. I was so upset – I adored that piano. To this day, it sits in my room, and every time I look at it, it reminds me of the times we spent together. I will keep it forever.

If you could read minds, whose thoughts would you start with?

Spirograph

My favourite toy was Spirograph, a set of stencils that allowed you to make beautiful patterns. It was really popular when I was a kid. It wasn’t a fancy, expensive game, but it was a lot of fun to play with, and I would spend hours playing with my friends or relatives. My favourite pattern to make was one that looked like a flower. I really wish I still had my Spirograph set – perhaps I can find one on Taobao and relive my childhood.

Toy mobile phone

I liked playing with my toy mobile phone. It was a great shade of pink, and it made beeping sounds when I pressed the buttons. Best of all, it had some of the same features as my parents’ real phones. My dad’s phone folded, and my mum’s had a cord so she could hang it around her neck.  My toy phone could do these things too, and that made me proud of it. I kept playing with it even after the batteries ran out. I used to love pretending to call my parents when they were at work.
