Whether it’s a special family night out, a special occasion with a special someone, or simply because it’s a day that happens to end in a -y, eating delicious food in an amazing restaurant is undeniably one of life’s little pleasures. There are plenty of places where you can do exactly that in Hong Kong, but why not try the new summer menu at The Continental?

To start off ...

We have nothing but praise for the French Beef Tartare served up first, which was made from lean beef, and left no oil aftertaste. Brightly presented and plated with pine nuts and anchovy croutons, the beef was tender and juicy, with a smoky paprika flavour that really helps the dish stand out from “regular” beef tartare.

One of the first things you think of as a summer dish when it’s hot and stuffy out is a salad. The Continental serves up a Burrata & Japanese Tomato salad that tastes of, well, summer. Burrata is a fresh Italian cheese made from mozzarella and cream. The outside is made from solid mozzarella, and the inside is made from soft cheese and cream. The Burrata and tomatoes taste great together, with neither one overpowering the other. The aged sherry vinaigrette dressing pulls together the entire dish perfectly, making this a dish not to be missed.

Get underway with ...

Escargot (a cooked land snail) is typically served in its shell, covered in herb butter. The Escargot & Chanterelle Mushroom Fricassee at The Continental, however, is served with Chanterelle mushrooms infused into the sauce, and is very tasty. The thought of snail might sound a bit awful to you, but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it, we say.

After snail, you might think that the Maine Lobster Spaghetti we were served might seem bland or boring – but far from it. The seafood pasta dish (which also comes with Sicilian pink shrimps) is very good, with each bite taking your mind to the ocean. The sauce perfectly complements the pasta and the seafood, helping to bind the two together. The dish also comes with a rocket garnish and roasted peppers – perfect for balancing out the heavier flavours of the seafood itself.

For seafood fans. Roasted Greenland Halibut (HK$240)

We could call the Roasted Greenland Halibut excellent – but that might not be a strong enough word for how much we liked it. Roasted a crispy golden brown, the fish was flaky and tender, and paired with puy lentil – which made for an interesting mix of textures. The vinaigrette sauce was infused with apple, helping the dish taste fresh and leaving us wanting more.

Know what else you eat during summer? Sausages – ones hot off the BBQ grill and in a hotdog bun. The Iberico Pork Pluma & Sausage is just as good as that, and the perfect summer dish. The pork shoulder was crispy and tender at the same time, and the chorizo is juicy and smoky. When eaten together with the pumpkin slices, the saltiness of the chorizo and the soft sweetness of the pumpkin melts together in your mouth. More please!

And finally ...

No big meal is complete without a sweet dessert, and nothing is sweeter than chocolate. The Valrhona Three Chocolates dish is the perfect way to round off a summer feast, and is made up of three types of chocolate – milk, white, and hazelnut, and is garnished with summer berries.
