A beef burger that oozes (seemingly) real meat juices, but is made from plants? No, it isn’t witchcraft. Say goodbye to soggy mushroom patties, and hello to Impossible Burgers.
These juicy patties look exactly the same as a real beef burger, and taste even better. Their secret ingredient is soy leghemoglobin, which comes from the roots of soy plants gives the 'meat' its meaty taste and texture, while beetroot juice gives the burgers a pink “bloody” look.
Lucky for us, Hong Kong became one of only two cities outside the US to start selling Impossible Burgers last year, and you can now find them in restaurants all over the city. Here are our top five places to try one.
Beef & Liberty
In busy Lan Kwai Fong in Central, Beef & Liberty is one of the very best places to get an Impossible Burger. The restaurant's signature Impossible Thai Burger is bursting with flavour. The combination of onion, shallots and garlic results in a taste that’s a mix between char siu and Peking duck – and the whole thing is topped with a creamy mayonnaise dressing.
Impossible Burger fans can also upgrade Beef & Lib’s Black Pepper burger to have it made with an Impossible patty. Add a side order of Impossible chilli cheese fries, and you have the ultimate Impossible combo.

This trendy eatery is headed by May Chow, who was named Asia’s Best Female Chef in 2017. The Impossible Bao is Chow’s unique take on the Impossible Burger. It’s small but mighty, with a near-perfect bun-to-burger ratio, black pepper glaze, fuyu mayo, and lemon coleslaw.
Chow has succeeded in transforming a traditional comfort food into a Michelin star-worthy delicacy. Unlike the other Impossible Burgers we’ve tried so far, the snow-white buns used for these baos are feather-light, with an almost marshmallow-soft texture.
What’s more, at HK$98, this is one of the cheapest, yet most interesting, Impossible burgers on the market.

Dear Lilly’s Impossible Burger allows vegans and veggies to experience a good ole’ classic burger. While the bun and filling are rather bland, this allows diners to fully savour the full, rich taste of the Impossible patty.
While this burger has a hefty price tag of HK$168, it also comes with a romantic, ambient setting – perfect for a date with your friend. Dear Lilly’s vintage-style decor and beautiful art installations will you give you another reason – aside from their impossibly tasty burger – to keep coming back again and again.

Thanks to its laid-back vibe and convenient location near Admiralty MTR, American Brasserie Bizou is great for a quick lunch or hang-out with friends. Its Impossible Burger is filled with hearty greens, and comes coated in a rich tartare sauce which truly brings out the “meaty” flavour of the patty.
If you’re a foodie (and aren’t we all?) who likes to know exactly what’s in your food, the staff will be only too happy to fill you in on the “secret ingredients” of this burger. But don’t worry if you can’t recreate it exactly at home; it’s an excuse – if you needed one – to return for another Bizou bite.

Cali-Mex Bar & Grill
While best known for its tasty burritos and tacos, Cali-Mex has been branching out recently, with new bar & grill diners and an array of tasty new menu items. Best of all, the popular chain now offers Impossible meat versions of its signature quesadillas, enchidillas, and burgers, for an extra HK$20.
We recommend trying the Green Burger with the Impossible patty, as the creamy avocado slices and sweet-and-sour coleslaw perfectly compliment the chunky burger and bun.
