YP cadet Annabel Preston models a cool LBD look inspired by Hawkeye of the Avengers superhero team.

Every girl needs that perfect little black dress (LBD), but just because it's black doesn't mean you can't inject personality into your outfit. Embellishments like leather details, lace, beading, or contrasting textures can take your look from basic to bomb. Black is a fairly forgiving colour, so pick a fit and silhouette that you feel comfortable in.

Teased and twisted

Plaits can look edgy; you just need a little extra hairspray and some bobby pins.

Section off about 10cm from the front of your hair and clip it to one side. Grab a section from right behind that and plait it, and use a rubber band that's similar to your hair colour to tie it off. Gently tease pieces from the plait to loosen it and give it a messier look, and then bobby pin the end of the plait to where it starts, so it's a loop. If the "loop" is popping up, use more bobby pins to keep the middle of the plait against your head. Taking the front section of hair you clipped away, spray it with hairspray and pin it to one side of the plait, giving it some height so it looks like it's swooped around your plait loop.

Comb the rest of your hair through with your fingers into a ponytail before plaiting it. Spray it generously with hairspray, pull out pieces and tease the ends to give it a spikier appearance. If you have long hair, use bobby pins to pin the middle of the plait to the back of your head, to create a scorpion tail effect.

Sharp wing

Winged eyeliner will always go well with a LBD. To create the perfect wing, line from your inner corner to your outer corner, and then draw a small flick from your outer corner towards the end of your eyebrow. For a more dramatic effect, draw a line from the end of your flick back to the inner corner of your eye, and fill in the space.

Make Up For Ever's make-up expert, Vanessa Law, says to draw a draft with gel or pencil liner first. Mistakes made with these are easy to fix using a cotton bud and some Vaseline or foundation. Once you have the perfect shape, go over it with a liquid line, which will also help it last longer.
