Although people say change comes from within, it helps to have a nice, fresh environment – so why not consider revamping your bedroom this weekend?

It’s no secret that flats in Hong Kong can be small, so trying to decorate one can be a real challenge – especially when you’re trying to balance maximising functional space with making it comfortable to live in. We asked experts from furniture maker Ikea to provide some tips on the best, easiest and cheapest ways to give your bedroom a makeover to ring in the New Year.

Let there be light

One of the easiest ways to change the look and feel of your room is by adjusting the lighting. Brighter lights will make your room feel livelier, while dim lighting will create a warmer, cosier atmosphere – perfect for a little bit of R&R. Add a couple of table lamps to help diffuse the light around the room, or pick up a decorative lamp that will throw pretty shadow patterns across the walls. For dedicated students, an adjustable table lamp will come in handy when they are studying.

Make use of colour

Sticking to a certain colour scheme – no matter the colour – is a great way of sprucing up a room, and can help create the illusion of extra space. Furniture of similar colours will blend together, and make a place feel bigger. If possible, stick to light-reflecting colours, like cream, light grey, or pale blue. If you’re on a budget, buy light-coloured rugs or throws, or buy a new set of bedsheets and covers in your chosen palette.

Be aware of your space

Are you truly making use of all the space available to you? It goes without saying that you can put a lot of stuff under your bed, but you can also put up small railings or shelves along the walls too. Store items you’re more likely to use in everyday life there, and put things you’re less likely to need under the bed. Make the most of corners and walkway spaces by picking up narrow shelving units, or things that serve a dual purpose – like a wall mirror that can also be used as a shelf, or a stool that has a storage function.

5 ways to make room for personal style and make your room your own little kingdom

It’s all about the decorations ...

Add a personal touch to your bedroom by sprucing up the walls. Pick up picture frames of different shapes and sizes to create your own personal gallery. If the frames you’re using are light enough, you can put them up with reusable, sticky hooks instead of nails. These will do less damage to your walls, and you’ll be able to rearrange your photos as you see fit.

If you fancy yourself as a gardener, add a little bit of greenery to your bedroom so that it won’t look too artificial. If you struggle to grow plants, use a plastic plant and pretend you have green fingers – or try your hand at keeping a succulent alive. Succulents are one of the easiest plants to care for, and are known to survive the harshest of conditions.

But don’t overdo it

Don’t go overboard with your decorating. What you decide to do with your own space is really down to you, but one of the most common mistakes that people make is doing too much. If you attempt to redecorate absolutely everything, then your bedroom might end up looking super-chaotic and messy.

Pick one or two things to focus on first, or do a few things that will help enhance what you already have. Then step back and assess if that’s enough, or there’s more work that can be done. Happy decorating!
