Nintendo has done it again by turning a simple platformer game into a fantastic 2.5D adventure that’s full of surprises in Yoshi’s Crafted World. By building the game world out of two-dimensional cardboard, players are introduced to clever gameplay mechanics wrapped in the cuteness and fun of a Yoshi game.
The whole story is very simple - Baby Bowser and perennial Mario baddie Kamek are after the Sundream Stone, a stone that can grant wishes. The stone is accidentally broken up into many pieces and it’s up to the lovable dinosaur to retrieve the shards to defeat Baby Bowser once and for all.
Although the game looks like a typical 2D side-scrolling platformer, it’s actually a 2.5D game where the player can shoot things at the background scenery and sometimes even walk into it! This changes the environment and can unlock new paths or secret items and is part of the fun of exploring every level multiple times.
Players can also flip the levels 180 degrees around and look at the environment from the other side (think of it like turning a dollhouse around so you can see the back of it) to solve the puzzles and get to the endpoint of the area.
Players can also unlock various adorable costumes that can give Yoshi special powers (such as a rocket ship costume that lets him jump higher), which can make the game easier to play. Another highlight is the sound track, which is appropriately themed to each level and delivers the right atmosphere for light questing or exciting boss fights.
Playing the game with two players is also a fun and new experience, as the Yoshis can "eat" one another and spit their buddy at the enemies to do damage. However despite the great graphics and the fantastic character design, the overall game length is short at about eight hours.
With a charming arts and crafts aesthetic, brilliant gameplay ideas and an adjustable level of difficulty for both platforming beginners and experts, Yoshi’s Crafted World is a worthy addition to your Nintendo Switch game collection.
