Ever since Americans discovered dance music (20 years after everyone else), a new group of super-producers have become stars in their own right.
Alongside David Guetta and Avicii, Scottish producer Calvin Harris is now part of EDM royalty.
Harris' 2011 hit We Found Love, which featured Rihanna, is a perfect example of how dance music could cross over into the pop mainstream. He tries to repeat the trick on his fourth studio album, Motion, with mixed results.
On lead single Summer, Harris' ropey voice is thankfully soon drowned out by a massive synth hook. At least he invites famous guests to take over the vocal duties on most of the other tracks.
Sometimes it works, as with Gwen Stefani's turn on Together, which sees the No Doubt singer's voice soaring over Harris' classic combination of driving bass and loud synths.
But Ellie Goulding's offering, Outside, sounds like a weaker version of her solo music, and Big Sean's Open Wide is a failed attempt to replicate Kanye's Yeezus vibe from last year.
It's a solid enough record, but it lacks spark.
