When that guy pulls out an acoustic guitar for no reason, there's a good chance he'll start singing a Jason Mraz song. Mraz' 2009 megahit I'm Yours set the bar for mediocre guitar pop and convinced a generation of long-haired boys that they'd get the girl - if only they'd learn a few chords.
Now he's back with his fifth album, assertively titled Yes!.
Mraz is a master of writing vague love songs which try to mean everything and nothing at the same time. Back to Earth floats along without leaving much of an impression, other than Mraz' use of every cliché he can think of.
He's particularly mellow on It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday, a cover of a Boyz II Men classic from which he's managed to suck out all the soul.
Long Drive is one of the most vomit-inducing love songs you'll hear this year, with Mraz officially becoming the one millionth songwriter to use a car journey as a metaphor for a relationship.
Mraz has clearly had a big influence on current stars such as Ed Sheeran. He might be better off leaving them to it.
