'You Need to Calm Down' and read our first thoughts on Taylor Swift's new single
The megastar dropped the lyrics video for her track just a couple of hours after announcing the release date for TS7
Taylor takes aim at the haters in her latest single.Shortly after the announcement of her new album, Lover, Taylor Swift dropped the lyric video for her single, You Need to Calm Down at noon Hong Kong time today.
The auto-tuned, metaphorically one-note anthem is a slightly disappointing follow-up to the upbeat and catchy mega hit ME! featuring Brendon Urie, where the overprotective, mother of two felines yelled “Je suis calme”, French for “I am calm”. We can’t help but wonder if this is going to be a theme on the album.
While the track itself doesn’t necessarily showcase Swift’s writing chops, the message behind it is as meaningful and empowering as it gets.
Think of it as a series of shots fired directly at the anti-LGBTQ community.
Swift wastes no words in taking aim and firing confetti bombs at (presumably) anti-gay rights legislators, mocking them and calling them stuck in the “dark ages”
“You are somebody that we don’t know/ But you’re comin’ at my friends like a missile/Why are you mad when you could be GLAAD?/Sunshine on the street at the parade/But you would rather be in the dark ages
The 29-year-old has previously explained the message behind the song in a video posted on Twitter by Beats 1.
“I’ve observed a lot of different people in our society who put so much energy and effort into negativity,” Taylor said. “And it made me feel like, ‘you need to just calm down.’”
The quote “Snakes and stones never broke my bones”, is a throwback to her Reputation-era self and when Kim Kardashian infamously referred to her as a “snake” - after Taylor said she didn’t give her hubby Kanye West permission to use her name in his song.
Lover, Swift’s seventh album - referred to by fans as TS7 - will feature 18 tracks and is set to be released on August 23.
