Light My Dart Up gives a misleading opening to Matt Corby’s latest album Rainbow Valley, the follow-up to his critically-acclaimed 2016 debut, Telluric. It starts off like a gentle lullaby that builds subtly in layers to a cinematic swell. But from here, the album changes quite dramatically.
Corby’s low, sleepy voice shifts into high falsettos in No Ordinary Life, practically reaching BeeGees level towards the end as the rolling breakbeat and piano flourishes throw back to the neo-soul vibe
of his debut.
All That I See has chillout electronica elements of the kind you’d expect from a Bonobo record, but with smooth funk basslines and another grooving breakbeat.
Get With The Times and All Fired Up include gospel choirs without sounding overblown, and still maintaining that vintage soul chill. Each song feels like it’s pushing further and further as New Day Coming incorporates congas, and a downbeat Motown/disco hybrid.
Better has distorted bass solos similar to Tame Impala’s Currents album, but with a bit more funk, before tender closer Rainbow Valley returns to the mellow tenderness which began this journey.
This album is the perfect companion for a lazy beach day.
