Four-piece Phoon, one of the most promising indie bands in Hong Kong, have dropped their self-titled EP – and it is nothing short of truly special.

After the soft jazz piano instrumental of Intro, the group dive into the boppy indie-pop banger YOU, which is filled with intricate drum patterns and razor sharp guitar chords, in contrast to the otherwise upbeat indie-pop.

! (Or Not Good!) is similarly melodic and exciting. Centred around dancing piano arpeggios, which feel reminiscent of nu-jazz trio GoGo Penguin, frontman Forest sings in Cantonese, as the song builds to another earworm chorus.

Hong Kong indie band Phoon is taking the local music scene by storm

The funky, scratchy guitar chords and drum interplay of Me will get anyone’s feet shuffling, even before it launches into another anthemic chorus. It showcases Phoon at their most joyful, boisterous, and summery.

Pure vies for the peak moment with atmospheric dream pop verses, as Forest melancholically sings, “You could be my love song, but you can never be my pure”.

People In The Dark closes the record on an epic high. Despite starting with laid-back chill-pop verses, the band break into their stride in the chorus.

Put simply, Phoon have really brought the thunder on this release.
