The eighth release from American art-rock group Dirty Projectors, Lamp Lit Prose, mixes incredible guitar interplay, with unpredictable and erratic songwriting. But it works.

Opening song Right Now is a swirling mesh of juxtaposed ideas. As lead singer David Longstreth sings, there are vast, even theatrical pitch shifts in his voice, and the song’s rustic rhythms sound like they were made with kitchen utensils.

Break-Thru is similarly abrasive, with Vampire Weekend-esque guitar riffs and a delicately placed harmonica being the only constants. T hat’s A Lifestyle is the most folk-infused track, recalling the gentler side of rock gods Led Zeppelin.

The second half of the album is more mild-mannered, with mellow tracks such as Blue Bird, and the soulful lounge vibes of What is the Time, following more conventional pop song structures.

I Found It In U is a satisfying college rock banger that channels the entire album’s angst into one concise track. Closer I Wanna Feel it All delivers a compelling, experimental finish.

Hopefully, Lamp Lit Prose will shine a light on Dirty Projectors so that those who have yet to experience their genius.
