Weki Meki’s Lucky is nauseating and cringeworthy [Review]
Lucky is the second mini album from K-pop star Weki Meki, comprising a collection of poor songs, cringey sounds and nauseating handclaps from start to finish.
Iron Boy is the only worthwhile song here, with its funky slap bass punching over a driving beat, and glitzy, sparkly keyboard textures adding an element of glamour to the lounge-funk Jamiroquai-esque stylings.
The worst moments are Lucky and La La La (basically extensions of the same song idea) which are both a frenzied mess featuring shameless vocal runs akin to those of a desperate talent contest participant.
Closer Butterfly – which was recorded especially for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics – is equally shocking, with its cheap imitation of Eurodance , with hints of tropical house thrown in, a Queen-like guitar line and a chorus melody which is a couple of notes shy from plagiarising the verse from BeeGees/Steps’ classic Tragedy.
All in all, this is a pretty terrible album. Weki Meki will be more than lucky if they get the opportunity to make another record after this.
