Sia’s new album Everyday Is Christmas a festive mix of hits and misses [Review]
For her eighth studio album, Australian singer-songwriter Sia decided to create a Christmas-themed record, Everyday Is Christmas, following the release of two singles over the last two months.
Lead single and opener Santa’s Coming For Us really sets the festive tone, with a funky bass and drum groove behind swathes of playful brass and church bells.
Snowman is a more soulful love song, with piano arpeggios dominating the mix, while the angelic choral qualities of Underneath The Christmas Lights capture all the cold of winter.
Piano ballads play their part throughout the record, with Snowflake, Underneath The Mistletoe, and the title track feeling like love songs with the Christmas theme being forced into the tracks.
Of the more upbeat numbers, Sunshine has the same power-pop sensibilities of Mika. However not even the bouncy brass section of Ho Ho Ho can save that car-crash of a song.
Everyday Is Christmas is a real hit-or-miss record, and may have worked better as an EP, rather than a full album.
