It’s almost time for the epic conclusion to the first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Avengers: Endgame hits cinemas today. Our superheroes will give it their all (and some may even have to give up their lives) to defeat Thanos the Mad Titan, and reverse the infamous “snap” that killed half of Earth’s population. To mark the occasion, the Young Post team reveals their favourite Marvel characters.

Iron Man

My favourite character from the MCU is Iron Man. I remember watching the first Iron Man movie when I was in secondary school. The scene where Tony Stark puts on his Mark II prototype blew me away, and I wished I had one, too. He is bound to get another new suit to fight Thanos in Endgame, and I can’t wait to see all his new nano-tech.

The Grandmaster

I love that the MCU features some really kick-ass female characters in a genre that has so long been “for boys”. But not even these strong, independent women can quite top the hysterical brilliance of The Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok. Of course, had he not been played by Jeff Goldblum, and had the movie not been directed by the genius Taika Waititi, I’m not sure there would be much to like about the power-hungry Elder. But his irreverent humour, in a franchise that is often taken so seriously, is a reminder that the MCU is for everyone. You don’t need to be a comic books PhD, you just need to be willing to be entertained.

Shuri
My favourite character is Shuri. She is a confident, powerful and incredibly intelligent superhero who easily wins people over with her quick wit and humour. What’s more, she’s a great role model for young boys and girls!

Gamora

Gamora. I admire her strength and intelligence, but I am mostly drawn to her vulnerable side. She is an extremely complex character, having been separated from her family at a young age and then ending up as the last of her species. Not to mention the fact that she is the adopted daughter of supervillain Thanos, who sacrificed her soul to gain the Soul Stone. That’s a lot for one character to go through!

Black Panther

Black Panther, of course – although I still get stuck on the name. While a real African hero would be a lion, or perhaps an elephant (African elephants are really powerful and clever), it's still great to see Africa get a shout out in the universe.

Susan Ramsay, Editor

Nick Fury

Nick Fury. No superpowers, no super soldier serum, no superhuman aiming abilities, just brains, experience and a super cool eye patch. And a cute pet cat, but going further into that would be spoilers for Captain Marvel

Rocket

While I’m always going to have a soft spot for Loki because I love a villain with a good story arc, Rocket tops my list. He never says he’s a hero – in fact, he tries really hard to be a bad guy. But no matter how tough he acts, his kindness shines through. And his unwavering love for Groot is undeniable. I also love his vulnerability. Realising his friends still love him despite his behaviour and poor decisions is one of the sweetest and most relatable moments of the MCU for me. Oh, and he’s furry like a kitty.

Heidi Yeung, Web Editor

Groot

I’d have to go with Groot. He isn’t too chatty, has great taste in music, and is willing to do whatever it takes to protect his friends, including sacrificing himself. Also, who doesn’t love trees? Especially super-cute baby ones.

Charlotte Ames-Ettridge, Sub-editor

Drax the Destroyer

While many of the characters in the MCU are praiseworthy (shout out to my girl Peggy Carter xoxo), I adore Drax the Destroyer. He comes from a species that is entirely literal, so jokes, metaphors, and puns hilariously go entirely over his head. He’s entirely honest about what he says, too, even if it’s hurtful – and we all need a friend or two to do that for us, right?

Ginny Wong, Production Editor

Captain America

For me, it’s definitely Captain America. Despite not being the most powerful Avenger, his willingness to always do the right thing makes him the essence of what being a superhero is about. Plus he looks really handsome with a beard, something I have never personally been able to pull off. Yet.

Jamie Lam, Special Projects Editor

Pepper Potts

Pepper Potts! Gwyneth Paltrow is an amazing actress, and I love the chemistry between her character and Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. A macho superhero like Iron Man wouldn’t be able to fight bad guys if he didn’t have someone like Pepper to give his life some balance. In times of chaos, Pepper’s always the one that keeps him sane and grounded.
