Avengers: Endgame will finally bring a conclusion to the epic first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and rabid fans have been scouring the internet for even the smallest scrap of info to confirm their favourite theories. Before we all head to cinemas on April 24 to see our heroes take on Thanos (Josh Brolin), here’s a list of the best fan theories so far.

1. The Avengers go small into the Quantum Realm

Ever since the survivors of the snap were seen at the end of the second trailer wearing matching red and white suits similar to Ant-Man’s (Paul Rudd) Pym-tech suit, fans have speculated that they will need to head into the Quantum Realm to perform a critical task. This looks to be highly likely, as the suits have two characteristic shoulder mountings that are exactly the same as Ant-Man’s original red suit, and Scott Lang is wearing one himself.

As to what they will be doing in the Quantum Realm, many viewers believe it has something to do with time travel and that they will be able to go back in time somehow to alter key moments. Some have even suggested that the Quantum Realm suits are also covered with the nano tech seen on Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr) latest suit, so the warriors can alter their outer appearance to blend in with whatever time period they are in. Only … well, time will tell if this theory is correct.

Some fans have even come up with a name for an unconventional way this theory would work.

2. Captain America takes over the Infinity gauntlet

In the climatic fight at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America (Chris Evans) was seen to be momentarily holding Thanos back by grasping the Infinity Gauntlet and grunting really loudly. While Steve Rogers was in contact with the gauntlet, Thanos looked amazed at what the Cap was doing, and he also glanced in surprise at the weapon itself.

Some Marvel fans have speculated that the Gauntlet has somehow sensed that Rogers is worthy of wielding such a powerful weapon and hesitated in using its full power against a being with such a noble heart. Does this mean the Gauntlet has a mind and motivations of its own? And will it help rebel against its current owner?

3. Goose the cat/Flerken saves the day

Goose the cat/Flerken was a surprise fan favourite in the recent Captain Marvel, when it was revealed she was part of a dangerous alien species with a threat level of: high. She was powerful enough to take out a squadron of Kree warriors quite easily, but her most amazing feat in the film was to swallow the Tesseract (which held the Space infinity stone) without seeming to suffer any ill effects.

Could Goose be the one to tip the scales in the Avengers’ favour? Could he get his own MCU franchise one day? It’s a long shot, but Goose the Flerken isn’t afraid to get in close and mix it up a little so let’s all hope she makes an important appearance in Endgame.

4. Doctor Strange has a plan

In Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) used the Time Stone to look at more than 14 million possible future outcomes (14,000,605 to be exact) and said there was only one path to victory. Minutes later, he reluctantly hands over the Infinity Stone to Thanos in return for the Mad Titan’s promise that he would spare Tony Stark’s life.

Does Strange have a master plan? Is Iron Man’s survival crucial to the success of that one in fourteen million chance of winning? As the good doctor says himself, “We’re in the Endgame now.” so let’s all hope the Sorcerer Supreme’s last-ditch strategy pays off.

5. Captain Marvel answers her pager

According to a 2016 Vulture interview with Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) “will be by far the strongest character we’ve ever had”. Granted those comments were made before Thor (Chris Hemsworth) got his upgrade and shiny new Stormbreaker weapon, but from what we’ve seen of Carol Danvers so far, she is powerful enough to blast through a Kree Accuser Warship in seconds.

There’s also the fact the Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) last act before turning to dust was to press his pager to ask Captain Marvel for help. The wily veteran warrior has been through many battles in his day and if he believes Captain Marvel can be a match for Thanos, fans should too.
