The official teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home was released on Tuesday and it look likes Spider-Man (Tom Holland) will be covering a slightly larger neighbourhood this time round, as a school trip takes him and his friends to Europe.
Here are some first impressions after watching (and rewatching) the short teaser an abnormally-high number of times.
Aunt May and Happy
Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), Spider-Man’s minder in Homecoming, appears to have quite a funny rapport with Peter Parker’s Aunt May (Marisa Tomei). As Happy struggles to explain why he would know that May is wearing a new dress (does he creepily keep a file about all of her clothes?), the audience is also left wondering the same thing as Spider-Man: “What just happened?”
We all need a little time off
As we learn in the opening seconds, Peter is going on a school trip to Europe with his friends. It seems like he really needs a vacation from all that superheroing he’s been doing because he’s reluctant to take his Spidey suit with him. We see he doesn’t really get much time to rest though, as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) shows up and promptly tasers Peter’s best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) before enlisting his help.
Love is in the air
After the surprise reveal that Peter Parker’s classmate Michelle (Zendaya) had the familiar comic book nickname of Spider-Man’s canonical love interest “MJ”, fans online have looked forward to seeing the sparks fly between them. They won’t be disappointed if the trailer is any indication, as they share a cute moment together in a beautiful theatre and also on a boat in the canals of Venice.
Even though he was reluctant to bring along his Spidey suit, we do see some cool new tech. At the 1:48 mark of the trailer, we see a mostly-black version of his suit that is probably more suited for stealth operations at night. And his regular suit also seems to have undergone a colour palette change, with the familiar blue being replaced with black. However, there was no sign of the Iron Spider suit that Peter Parker used in Avengers: Infinity War so we’ll have to wait to find out if he has any new tricks up his sleeve.
Mysterio: Friend or foe?
The biggest surprise from the trailer is the appearance of Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), traditionally a stuntman and special effects expert who is a frequent foe of Spider-Man in the comics. In the trailer, he seems to be a good guy, helping Spider-Man to fight off a water elemental with mysterious green beams and powered flight from a nifty Roman Centurion-like suit. Whether he’s a friend or foe, he looks to be an exciting edition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Spider-Man: Far From Home hits cinemas in July.
