Children’s horror fiction novel series Goosebumps is back on the big screen with their second instalment Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.
The story begins with Sonny (Jeremy Ray Taylor), and his friend Sam (Caleel Harris) finding one of author R. L. Stine’s (Jack Black) unpublished Goosebumps novels along with a ventriloquist dummy named Slappy who comes to life.
The mischievous Slappy manages to escape and wreaks havoc on the town. Sonny teams up with Sam and his sister Sarah to try to stop matters from getting worse, but they need help from the Slappy’s creater himself if they want to put an end to it all.
The lacklustre plot is saved by impressive CGI animation. Fans of the series will be glad to see all their favourite supernatural beings back in one place for one great big monster bash.
Ken Jeong steals the show with his great comedic performance as Sonny’s next door neighbour. Sadly the same cannot be said about Black’s character. He simply does not get enough screen time for this character to build or grow, making his role pretty much redundant.
Ultimately Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween is an easy watch, offering fun and goofiness, along with a few light scares for younger viewers. Just don’t expect it to give you any actual goosebumps.
