It is clear that Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is dying to scare up a few laughs. Mostly, though, it fails dismally and your time and money are seriously better spent elsewhere.
Count Dracula, voiced by Adam Sandler, is a bit lonely and trying to find a date. His daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) organises a surprise holiday, on a cruise boat that looks remarkably like half of the Titanic.
All the loveable characters from the hotel join them on the cruise, which turns out to be run by the legendary vampire hunter, Van Helsing (Jim Gaffigan) and his great-granddaughter Ericka (Kathryn Hahn).
Dracula feels a zing with Ericka, even though she’s trying to kill him, all leading up to a spectacular ending in the lost city of Atlantis – which was the best part of the whole movie. Unfortunately, you have to sit through an hour and a half of pointless dialogue and jokes that miss the mark before you get to the wonderful ending.
Although the first movie in this series was great, and the second on was passable, this one ... fails miserably. There’s nothing new at all, really, and that’s a pity.
The animation itself is great, but it’s not worth the time and effort to watch it. The script has too much of the famous “bleh bleh bleh”, and the gags and slapstick humour all fall far short of the original movie.
