Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens this week, and we can’t wait. Here are seven things we’re most excited about.
Will they/won’t they
The half-human StarLord/Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and blue-skinned assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana) had undeniable chemistry in the first film, and the sequel’s trailer certainly hints at a development in their relationship. If a love story comes out of it ... we’re okay with that.
Bespoke roles
GotG Director and scriptwriter James Gunn returns to both roles for this second episode, which means utter continuity.
Executive producer Nikolas Korda says: “On most films you are not sure who is going play what when the script is in the development phase. Going into this film we knew almost all the characters’ voices and rhythms, what worked and what didn’t in the first film. So that really allowed James to ... play to the strengths of all the actors.”
I am Groot!
The trisyllabic humanoid tree sacrificed himself for his fellow Guardians in the first film, but they grew a sapling from the original. Baby Groot grooving in his little pot at the end of the first film was one of the cutest scenes ever in the history of the Marvel cinematic universe. Now a whole movie full of Baby Groot hanging out and fighting baddies? I am Groot! (Translation: Yes, please!)
New worlds
There are some brand new planets this time round, and more in-depth looks at some of the ones we saw last time. We can’t wait to see what the production designers have come up with for the Sovereign planet and Contraxia for starters.
The music
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, as the soundtrack was called, sold more than a million copies, and hit the top spot on iTunes around the world. Obvs we have high hopes for the second volume. Music is key to telling the story in this series; in fact, it’s so important, this second film is named after the second mixtape Quill gets from his mum.
What’s more, while most films use temporary tracks during filming, and the final songs are chosen in post-production, Gunn incorporates the songs into the script. “They are a part of the storytelling,” he says. “Each song is very specific to the scene where it’s placed.”
Stunts
Marvel is known for spectacular stunts and jaw-dropping special effects. And judging by all the hilarious #WHATSMYSNACK videos Pratt posted to his Instagram, we know he’s stayed in excellent shape. And that can only be for one thing: kicking butt.
Post-credits scene
Well, duh, right? What’s next for MCU? We have to know! Gunn revealed on Twitter there will be a grand total of five - five! - post-credits scenes, so make sure you don’t move a muscle until the lights come back on!
