Great news for theatre lovers: two internationally acclaimed Broadway musicals, Matilda The Musical and The Lion King, will premiere in Hong Kong later this year.

The musical adaption of Roald Dahl’s classic story will open on September 20 at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, following its debut in Singapore earlier this year. This production also toured Australia and New Zealand from 2015 to 2017.

Three months after that, The Lion King will debut at AsiaWorld-Expo Arena on December 18. As part of an international tour, the 25th global production of the musical, the show will be performed in English with Chinese subtitles. This tour started in Manila in March 2018, bringing joy to Disney fans from countries including Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Based on the 1994 Disney animated feature of the same name (and this years upcoming live-action remake), The Lion King officially opened in Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York in November 1997.

The show tells of the adventures of a young lion prince, Simba, living in the African savanna, who must challenge his wicked uncle, Scar, for the right to rule his kingdom after his father’s death. Performed in eight languages and seen by more than 95 million people worldwide, The Lion King is the only show in history to generate six productions worldwide, running over 15 years.

Matilda was first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, in November 2010. It follows the story of a smart, courageous, extraordinary five-year-old girl who decides to change her destiny by embracing her individuality and challenging those who don’t believe in her. The production has been running for seven years in London’s West End and Broadway, and has been seen by more than 8 million people so far.

Definitely time to start saving your allowance!
