Since 2010, video-sharing platform YouTube has celebrated their most popular content and creators with their annual YouTube Rewind video. However this year’s rewind is not sitting well with viewers and has already racked up a whopping 8 million dislikes in less than one week. At the time of publishing, the video has also garnered 2 million likes.

Not only does this make YouTube Rewind 2018 the most disliked video of 2018 so far, it has also become the second most disliked video of the all time behind Justin Bieber’s Baby music video (9.7 million dislikes).

YouTube Rewind videos have always been criticised in the past for their cringe-worthy moments and poor choice of storyline, but they have never received so many dislikes in such a short amount of time - until now.

The amount of dislikes may be due to viewers disagreeing with the content YouTube chose to recap, and the choice to leave out major YouTube creators. These include the PewDiePie vs T Series saga, Logan Paul Vs KSI beef and boxing match, and the emotional series The Mind of Jake Paul by fellow YouTuber Shane Dawson.

All of these events and creators have been embroiled in controversy over offensive statements and videos in the last two years.

Felix Kjellberg (more commonly known as PewDiePie) has already made a response video to the rewind. In this video we see him mocking the cringy content of the rewind video and stating that he was informed by YouTube that he would not be participating this year, just as he was not asked to participate last year. He said, “I remember Rewind [used to be] something that seemed like an homage to the creators that year.”

As PewDiePie is still the current YouTuber with the most subscribers, many fans feel that he should have been recognised in the annual recap video.

What do you think about this year’s Rewind? Is YouTube just trying to avoid sensitive or controversial topics? Will YouTube Rewind 2018 become the most hated and disliked video of all time? Who would you have put in the recap video?
