Skating on the thin ice

Skating on the thin ice

If you don’t show up when you’re supposed to, you’ll upset a lot of people.

Toby: Where were you last night, Mark?

Mark: What do you mean where was I last night? Why are you asking?

Toby: Because you weren't where you should have been.

Mark: Well, if you must know, I went to the cinema with Paul. Is there anything wrong with that? What’s rattled your cage? What’s it got to do with you?

Toby: I’m only asking for your own good. You weren't at football practice. And that's the third week in a row you’ve missed. We’ve got an important match coming up at the end of the month. You should have been there.

Mark: Did anybody say anything?

Toby: Mr Tang asked if anyone knew where you were. He didn't look very pleased. I’d say you’re skating on thin ice.

Mark: I’ll make up some excuse when he asks me.

Toby: But that will be a bare-faced lie! That's not right!

Mark: What’s got into you this morning? I haven't committed a crime. I missed a stupid football practice! There’s no harm in that.

Toby: Yes, there is. You’re letting Mr Tang down …. and yourself …..and the rest of us. You’re the best player we have in the team and we need you there when we practise.

Mark: If I’m the best player, why do I need to practise?

Toby: Are you joking! You need to practise with the rest of us. We need to play as a team not eleven separate players. You should have heard Tommy Li when you didn't turn up. You know he doesn't like you at the best of times. He really started to stir things up, but Mr Tang stopped him.

Mark: Tommy’s just jealous. He can't kick a ball! He missed out on five goals last time we played St Peter’s.

Toby: Look, it's not Tommy I’m bothered about. It’s you!

Mark: I’ll make sure I’m there next week. Just to please you.

Toby: If you weren't my best friend, I’d walk away right now.

Mark: I really don't know what you're getting your knickers in a twist for. Calm down!

Toby: I am perfectly calm. I’m just telling you you are skating on thin ice. There were sixteen of us at the practice last night. All of us want a place in the team. You might be the best player, but if you keep on missing practice, Mr Tang is not going to select you.

Mark: Mr Tang wouldn't leave me out of the final team. Don't you worry about that.

Toby: Don't sound so confident. There were other rumblings last night. Tommy wasn't the only one who wasn't pleased with you.

Mark: I have other things in my life besides the school football team, you know.

Toby: For goodness sake! I’m just warning you. If you miss a practice again, you’ll get dropped from the team. Right. Topic closed. Come on, we’re going to be late. I’ve got stuff to do when we get to school – did you finish your geography homework?
