Mother's Day poetry competition 2019 entry by Emma Bonnifait

We asked our readers to write a poem about why their mums are so special and what she means to them. Here is one of the entries. It has not been edited.

This Mother's Day, give your mum the gift of poetry to show her your love.

Oh, Mother

Oh, Mother. I see that you’re hurt
I see that you have been tossed and turned and people have broken you
Oh, Mother. I also see that you are strong
I see that you hold yourself ever so well with all your might
Oh, Mother. What can I do?
I see that you need me but I am too weak to see you hurt
Oh, Mother. I apologise
For I will never be as strong as you’ve always been.
Oh, Mother. I beg of you
Please let down your barricades, let the feelings overflow, even if it’s just for a while
For I, your daughter truly knows
That is not your true smile.
