Oddball scientist Flint Lockwood (Bill Harder) has moved on with his life. In his last movie, his machine that made larger-than-plane hamburgers went out of control and he had to shut it down. So, all should be back to normal.
The goofy machine has drawn the attention of an innovative firm, Live Corp, which offers Flint a job. He and his family and friends move to California.
But far from being shut down, Flint's machine starts making food that comes to life in the form of foodimals. Flint is sent home to deal with the crisis.
With his square-faced dad (James Caan), weatherwoman girlfriend Sam Sparks (Anna Faris) and friends, Flint must face crawling cheesespiders and walking tacodiles. While not all the food-themed jokes are that funny or clever, the cleverly crafted images are.
The cuddly, cute foodimals are the champions here. Their every aspect, from their appearance, and facial expressions to their gestures are refined enough to make them almost human. They certainly tug at the heartstrings.
If the randomness didn't get occasionally out of control - the plot sometimes has seems to have no boundaries or goal - this would definitely earn another star.
