Hong Kong children are taller and heavier over the last 30 years

Last Tuesday, September 10, was Teachers' Day in Hong Kong. To celebrate, we asked our readers the most important thing that they had learned from their teachers. Here are the top 10 answers:

1. Use power wisely

My teacher says: "Always flush the toilet". This may sound strange, but the ultimate message is that with great power, comes great responsibility - even with the simplest of tasks. So flush away!

Ruby Leung, 16

2. Work-life balance

My biology teacher taught me that passion for a subject can extend beyond the classroom. The best way to enjoy learning is to combine your school subjects with extra-curricular activities that you enjoy.

Ruthie Laidler, 16

3. Power nap

One teacher told me that we should take a nap at lunchtime so that we will be fresh and able to concentrate better during classes after lunch. Funnily enough, my next class after lunch is that teacher's class!

Lam Ming-yeung, 16

4. Toughen up

I was told to prepare for the real world. My teacher said: "If you think I'm strict, wait until you get a boss!" I have a feeling that bracing myself for harsher treatment in life will serve me well.

Liam Fung, 11

5. Think of others

We're always so busy studying and worrying about our grades that we sometimes forget about the people who worry about us, like our parents. My teacher taught me to love and care about my parents more.

Mak Tsoi-sze, 15

6. Mind your manners

My teacher taught me to be polite, as it's so simple to do and it can make a big difference to what other people think of you. If you ever need help from someone, adding a simple "please" or "thank you" might just work.

Ken Cheung Ka-wai, 14

7. Fab friend

My homeroom teacher doesn't teach me in any subject, so my classmates and I haven't learned any mathematical equations or sentence structures from him. Instead, we all wear matching hoodies, get together to play ukuleles and throw birthday parties for each other. He's taught me that being a teacher isn't just about being a mentor, but sometimes about being an awesome friend.

8. New views

There's an old saying that goes: "Students are born with wings and teachers help them to fly." Being a student is not about who gets the best grades; but rather about being able to look at the world from a different perspective. Remembering facts and studying the world are two completely different things!

Abhishek Bhujel, 17

9. Do what you love

I really wanted to take history but almost everyone, even a history teacher, advised against it, as it's not an easy subject in which to get an A. But one of my teachers told me: "If you want to learn, just do it, and your grades will follow." I'm going to continue listening to this advice, as I got an A in the end!

Dhruv Singh, 15

10. Learn from your mistakes

I was told that students have the freedom to make mistakes. We're still learning, so we shouldn't be afraid to try different things and fail. Since then, I've tried many new things; and even though I made mistakes, I also learned more.
