Director Guillermo del Toro is the master behind the dark sci-fi fantasy Pan's Labyrinth. In his latest apocalyptic film, Pacific Rim, he taps a new world where hot-blooded heroes and stainless-steel robots battle it out with monsters.

It is set in the future, when humans no longer live in peace after the rise of mysterious monsters called Kaijus, who come from the depths of the sea. To fight back, countries have joined forces and initiated the Jaeger programme, building towering battle machines, each operated by two like-minded pilots.

As attacks become more frequent, ex-pilot Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam), who lost his brother in a fight against a Kaiju, is summoned back to the team. But governments are losing patience with Jaeger, so the crew must move to Hong Kong, near the frontier of war.

Then Becket finally meets Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), who chose him as her co-pilot.

Pacific Rim is a pleasant surprise. You may be put off by the lacklustre movie trailers, but the battles between the robots and beasts are worth the extra ticket price of a 3-D showing.

A few scenes feature some cheesy conversation, but the overall spirit-lifting script will give you goosebumps on a few occasions. Pacific Rim is the underdog that truly deserves the 3-D treatment.
